Description

This session is designed to introduce students and developers to the world of Open Source Software (OSS) and how contributing can accelerate both learning and career growth. Participants will gain insights into the open source ecosystem, contribution pathways, and collaboration best practices. The session will also cover renowned global OSS programs such as Google Summer of Code (GSoC), Major League Hacking (MLH), and others that provide mentorship, funding, and global exposure to contributors. By the end of the session, attendees will understand how to start contributing, build a strong profile, and take part in prestigious OSS opportunities.

  • Introduction to Open Source: What OSS is, its impact, and why it matters.

  • Getting Started: Exploring Git/GitHub basics, finding beginner-friendly issues, and making the first contribution.

  • Collaboration & Best Practices: Code reviews, pull requests, and communication in OSS communities.

  • OSS Programs Overview: Deep dive into GSoC, MLH Fellowship, Hacktoberfest, and other initiatives.

  • Building Your OSS Profile: Showcasing contributions on GitHub, LinkedIn, and resumes.

  • Path Forward: Resources, communities, and strategies for long-term contribution.
