Session Description

Session Description

This session is a hands-on tour of 18 modern CLI and TUI tools that upgrade the everyday terminal workflow — faster search, prettier output, smarter navigation, and git without memorizing flags. Rather than theory, each tool is shown with real commands you can copy and run immediately: eza and bat for better file/code viewing, zoxide and fzf for faster navigation, ripgrep and fd for search, lazygit, delta, and serie for a smoother git experience, superfile and btop4win as TUI replacements for file managers and system monitors, helix, vim, and neovim for terminal-based editing, plus glow, jq, and gittype for markdown rendering, JSON processing, and typing practice. The goal is to leave with a starter pack of tools that make daily terminal work quicker and less painful, regardless of OS.

Key Takeaways

Key Takeaways

  1. Small tools compound — each one replaces a single pain point (ls, cd, grep, find), and together they meaningfully speed up daily terminal use.
  2. Most have zero-config wins — bat, eza, fd, rg work great out of the box with no setup required.
  3. git gets dramatically better — lazygit + delta + serie turn git from flag-memorization into a visual, fast workflow.
  4. Fuzzy search ties everything together — fzf pairs with fd, rg, and zoxide to make almost anything interactively searchable.
  5. Editors are a spectrum — vim (ubiquitous), neovim (extensible via Lua/LSP), and helix (modern defaults, zero plugin setup) — pick based on how much configuration you want to own.
  6. Cross-platform coverage — most tools work on Windows, macOS, and Linux (btop4win is the Windows-specific exception), so the whole stack is portable.
  7. Installable in one line — nearly the whole toolkit is available via brew, winget, or cargo install, so there's a low barrier to trying it today.
