Session Description

OpenStreetMap is the Wikipedia of maps - a geographic database that is freely licensed for everyone to use, study, share, and modify.

OpenStreetMap can be used to replace Big Tech maps, and also for search, navigation, analysis, humanitarian missions, games, making 2D/2.5D/3D models of the world, and lots more.

In this workshop, we will venture outdoors to add shops, amenities, addresses, etc to OpenStreetMap using your smartphone.

New participants will be introduced to simple applications like StreetComplete and MapComplete, and will focus on adding shops and amenities, ratings and reviews, and photos.

Returning participants can opt to learn more advanced editors like Every Door and Vespucci/Go Map, and will learn to add building details, addresses, and other specialized data.

Required: Android or iOS smartphone. (Android preferred.)
Highly recommended: power bank and charging cable

Kashish (she/her) a.k.a. contrapunctus is a software freedom activist and OpenStreetMap surveyor.

She has been an OpenStreetMap contributor since 2016, motivated by the desire to improve swatantra software ("FOSS") and protect privacy. She can be found mapping at almost any moment, and regularly hosts OSM workshops in Delhi and wherever else she happens to go.

She enjoys writing swatantra software, especially using the Lisp family of languages.
