I dropped my phone. Someone returned it, but the scare made me realize I needed a more reliable backup strategy.

Looking at iCloud pricing, paying recurring fees for something I could potentially run on my own hardware didn’t make sense. So I finally tried something I’d been putting off: self-hosting my photo library.

In this 15-minute talk, I’ll share:

  • What the phone incident taught me about backups

  • Investigating OSS solutions

  • Self-hosting "Immich" at home

  • The real trade-offs: cost, maintenance, reliability, and control

I see self-hosting, I approve. Jokes aside, this does seem like a good lightening talk. Most of the times, people don't really talk about the trade-offs so it's good to see that's included.
