Open Source Cloud Stack

AWS, GCP, and Azure pretty much dominate the cloud world with their massive array of services under IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) and PaaS (Platform as a Service). But what if one is looking for something more flexible, cost-effective, and free from vendor lock-in? That’s where open-source cloud platforms come into play. In this talk, we’ll explore how we can replicate or even replace the services offered by these cloud giants using open-source technologies.

We’ll dive into key services like server provisioning, container orchestration, microservices hosting, serverless computing, storage, software-defined networking (SDN), virtual private clouds (VPC), disaster recovery, autoscaling, API gateways, content delivery networks (CDN), monitoring, logging, stream processing, ETL, data warehousing, , auto scaling, security, streaming, managed databases and CI/CD tools, showing you how to build an open-source cloud stack that’s scalable, flexible, and fully under your control. Various individual open source libraries and frameworks others provide the building blocks to create powerful cloud solutions without the price tag and constraints of commercial clouds are looked at. The stacks built out of them are investigated. Commercial offerings of these by the likes of OpenShift, Platform9, and how these can be built on top of Metal As a Service from Canoncial etc. We’ll break it down into IaaS and PaaS categories:

IaaS: From server provisioning and GPU provisioning to storage, VPC, and disaster recovery, we’ll see how open-source solutions stack up.

PaaS: From container orchestration and microservices to serverless computing, managed databases, and API gateways, we’ll explore how open-source PaaS platforms like Kubernetes and OpenShift offer real alternatives.

By the end of this talk, you’ll have a high level roadmap to explore open-source cloud alternatives, understand how they integrate into your infrastructure, and leverage them to build a cloud solution that rivals the big players—without the heavy price tag or lock-in.
